Engine Facilities

Current facilities at the ERC include several fully instrumented engine test cells, equipped with electric dynamometers and speed controllers.

The medium duty test cell was constructed in 2016 and features a 2013 Cummins ISB 6.7 L Engine modified for single cylinder operation by deactivating cylinders 1-5. The dynamometer is a steady-state trunnion mounted swinging fields DC dynamometer with speed control. Presently operated by the Kokjohn group, the function of the test cell is to facilitate research into advanced combustion regimes, with capability to undertake research into Conventional Diesel Combustion, Gasoline Compression Ignition and Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition. A National Instruments PXI with ECS coupled with Drivven's Combustion Analysis Software serves as the Engine Control Unit, with real time and next-cycle control over the engine. Low speed data acquisition is done using a National Instruments CompactDaq system. LabVIEW is used to automate large parts of the data acquisition process. The primary diagnostic is engine pressure sensing via a piezoelectric, water-cooled sensor manufactured by Kistler. Emissions analysis is done with an AVL 415 SE smokemeter( particulate emissions) and a Thermo Nicolet Nexus 670 Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer for exhaust gas analysis. Numerous thermocouples and pressure sensors allow precise control of the engine parameters as well as precise observations to be taken. Additionally, fuel and air flow are measured by using Coriolis mass flow meters from Endress and Hauser, allowing for precise measurements. The test cell also features dual fuel CRDI capabilities, which are used to novel fuel injectors capable of seeding a high pressure fuel stream into another, called Adaptive Dual Fueling injectors. A special aftertreatment system with a Diesel Particulate Filter, Diesel Oxidation Catalyst, Diesel Exhaust Fluid Doser, Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalyst Bed and Ammonia Slip Catalyst which are specially sized to a single cylinder setup.
