Project

Determine the major constituents and properties of the soluble organic fraction (SOF) component of diesel engine particulate matter (PM) as a function of the fuel and combustion conditions and the effect of the SOF properties and composition on PM oxidation kinetics. Planned results will include both a general kinetic framework for the dominant oxidation reactions for SOF components and SOF-laden solid carbon, and a practical kinetic model that can be used to simulate the behavior of diesel particulate filter regeneration for a representative range of SOF-loaded PM. Research will conducted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's National Transportation Research Center (NTRC), under the direction of Stuart Daw and Bruce Bunting. University of Wisconsin advisors are Professors Christopher Rutland and David Foster.
